Types of OBD

OBDI

OBD1 was introduced long before the OBD2 models, which only started in the early 1990s. The goal was to develop a diagnostics system that focuses on the emission control systems of a vehicle.

Eobd2

It usually refers to manufacturer-specific functionality available on some OBD2/EOBD tools to obtain additional parameters/information from a car.

ObdII

The On-Board Adapter (OBD) is made up of electronic control units (ECUs) that take input from multiple detectors or sensors activating actuators to achieve the required efficiency. It is also referred to as a vehicle interface adapter. It takes data and processes the diagnosis. Normally, the data flows in both ways similar to a computer gateway.

OBD And Legal History

In 1994, the state of California made it necessary for everyone to have an OBD scanner in their vehicles, and it should be recommended by SAE which is now called an OBD2  Scanner. In 1996, OBD II became mandatory for all cars which continue until today.

Each scanner has unique capabilities and functionalities.
